Administrative / Biographical history

Major Christopher Grundy (b. 1926, d. 2011), known by most as Crick, was a member of the Inland Waterways Association's national council and was involved with their campaign for the restoration of the canals from 1946. He was a commander in the 1st Battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry and received a Military Cross for his service in Korea. He also served in Kenya and Germany. Grundy had a lifelong passion for the waterways, and throughout his life he owned three boats including a converted narrowboat and a Chinese junk. He was involved early on in the Inland Waterways Association's campaign for the restoration of the canals and in 1956 became a member of its national council. He continued to work for the restoration of the canals and for public access. Later in life, following his retirement from his Army career, he became the manager of the Stratford-Upon-Avon Canal as well as curator of Packwood House for the National Trust. He undertook significant work for the Upper Avon Navigation Trust as honorary secretary and contributed to the reopening of the river for public use in 1974.
