Administrative / Biographical history

Devised in response to growing threat from the railway, this scheme was one of several intended to improve communication between London and Birmingham and emerged from the earlier London and Birmingham Junction Canal scheme. William Cubitt surveyed a line from the Worcester & Birmingham Canal near Worcester Bar across via Solihull to the Oxford Canal at Ansty. This appears to have been Cubitt's own idea but not to have been discussed with a canal company and was never begun. For more details, see 'The Canals of the East Midlands (including part of London)' by Charles Hadfield and 'The Illustrated History of Canal & River Navigations' by Edward Paget-Tomlinson.
