Administrative / Biographical history

Good toll receipts on the Witham Navigation in the 1820s created a climate favourable for an extension of the Witham to the Ancholme. John Rennie made a survey and proposed two routes but the scheme never matured. For more details, see 'The Canals of Eastern England' by Charles Hadfield.
