Unloading salt from Sir John Knill's narrowboat 'Columba'

Description

Black and white photograph showing salt being unloaded at New Mills in Newbury on the Kennet and Avon Canal. Taken from the side of the canal looking towards the back end of the boat, the salt is being unloaded into a lorry [owned by John Gould's sister]. John Knill is photographed moving a bag of salt between the boat and the lorry, along with John Gould who can be seen in the hold of the boat and Tom Foxon on the gunnel. "Columba" and "John Knill London" are written on the side of the cabin. In the background there is another van which appears to belong to Newbury Laundry, there is also a Hovis building on the opposite side of the canal.
