Administrative / Biographical history

Dr Roger Squires graduated from London University (Birkbeck College) in Geography. He subsequently took a Master's degree in Economic and Social History and followed this with the presentation of a Ph.D thesis that examined the role of the contrasting waterway restoration movements in Britain, Ireland and the USA. He has been the UK Director of the American Canal Society and President of the Midlands based Waterways Activties Group, as well as being an active memebr of the Inland Waterways Association and the Waterway Recovery Group. His introduction to canals came in the early 1950s, with boyhodd excursions to the nearby Grand Union Canal at Hemel Hempstead, to study the last of the regular commercial traffic on that waterway. Later, as a Geographer, the vision of the tremendous potential offered by the canals as a prime leisure resource stimulated a rekindling of those early memories and led to extensive nationwide research into the revival plans for sections of derelict waterways to offer multifunctional use. Much of his leisure time has been spent investigating the various local schemes and recording their progress. He has been a regular contributor to 'Canal & Riverboat', 'Waterways News', 'Waterways World' and to the journal of the Railway & Cnal Historical Society. He is well knownas a lecturer and guset speaker on waterways themes.
