Great Western Railway Company, records
These are records formerly held by the Great Western Railway Company and passed to what was then the Public Record Office, who decided that they were superfluous to requirements and, since the records relate to the waterways, they were sent to Gloucester Waterways Museum, then the home of the 'British Waterways Archive'. The records have subsequently been transferred to The Waterways Archive at National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port. The records include notices to admit, pleadings, plans, acts, bills, correspondence, leases, petitions, agreements, minutes of evidence and licences relating to the Grand Junction Canal Company, the Birmingham Canal Navigation Company, the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal Company, the Worcester & Birmingham Canal Company, the Stourbridge Extension Canal Company, the Bath & Bristol Canal Project, the Grand Western Canal, the Kennet & Avon Canal, the Somersetshire Coal Canal, the (never to be built) Berkshire and Hampshire Junction, the River Tone navigation, the Bute Ship Canal, the Staffordshire & Worcester Canal, the Henley & London Waterworks Navigation, the Chard Canal, the Hereford & Gloucester Canal, the Crulin Arm of the Monmouthsire & Brecon Canal, the River Looe and the Lydney Harbour & Docks. A detailed summary list is available for interested researchers.
