Local folklore says that in 1912 a cow named Buttercup fell into the canal at the Barrowford end of the Foulridge tunnel on the Huddersfield Canal and swam through to the other end of the tunnel. The exhausted swimmer was revived with alcohol and a photograph in the nearby Hole in the Wall pub recorded the incident. The caption with the picture stated 'This cow owned by Mr R Brown, Blue Slate Farm, swam the full length of the Foulridge Mile Tunnel, September 24th 1912' (It is assumed that this item is that photograph)
