Image of cantilever bridge at Wheldrake on the River Derwent (Yorkshire)

Description

the bridge featured is across the Yorkshire river Derwent at wheldrake Ings. The wooden bridge was replaced with a steel structure in 1967, the old bridge being presented to the Castle Museum in York. Unfortunatley, vandals set fire to the storage building and the bridge was destroyed. (see similar photograph of the bridge in 'Navigation on the Yorkshire Derwent' by Pat Jones p74) Photograph identified by readers of Waterways World December 2004
