                            Administrative / Biographical history
This Shrewsbury-to-Stafford railway appears to have been proposed as part of the formation of the Shropshire Union Railways and Canal. Nine of the proposed Shropshire Union directors were on the board of the Shrewsbury and Trent Valley Railway, as were three members of the former's Committee of Management. The authorization Act seems to have been passed in 1846, and shortly after it probably became part of the Shropshire Union. It opened in June 1849.

                            System of arrangement
It has not been possible to ascertain any original structure of record-keeping from the small number of records held for this company. The fonds has therefore been arranged in chronological order.
