Administrative / Biographical history
The Canal Control Committee was formed in March 1917 to oversee independent canals and relieve the railways during World War One. The independent canals had previously been overlooked by the government during the war, although the canals owned by railway companies were already under government control. The Canal Control Committee was also able to subsidise independent canals, but these subsidies ended in 1920.
