Ships and barges on the Manchester Ship Canal

Description

Black and white photograph taken by Cyril Arapoff showing the view from Barton Swing Aqueduct looking upstream on the Manchester Ship Canal. Norwegian tanker 'Fjordaas' is discharging on Barton Oil Berth. Passing the tanker is Manchester Corporation Cleansing Departments steam tug 'John Richards' with two empty barges having been discharged of cargo of household waste at their Boysnope Wharf. The waste is then transported by narrow gauge railway onto the nearby Chat Moss. In the distance can just be seen the bulk cargo berths of Irwell Park Wharf, Eccles. In the foreground is the semaphore signal permitting craft to enter the Barton Swing Aqueduct from the north side.
