Transporter bridge at Runcorn over the Manchester Ship Canal

Description

Black and white photograph by Cyril Arapoff taken from the Manchester Ship Canal riverside bank tidal opening just below Old Quay Swing Bridge, Runcorn. To the left, tugs are berthed at MSC’s Old Quay maintenance workshops. Runcorn Widnes Transporter Bridge shadowing Britannia Railway Viaduct carrying the LNWR main line from Liverpool to London Euston traversing both canal and River Mersey is in the background. The ‘tidal opening’ was originally constructed to allow canal replenishment during high tides, while on the Mersey shoreline, fishing ‘Nobbys’ are beached.
