Ship and transporter bridge at Runcorn on the Manchester Ship Canal

Description

Black and white photograph taken by Cyril Arapoff showing Manchester Ship Canal’s tug/tender ‘Daniel Adamson’ heading downstream passing Runcorn ‘tidal opening’ on the right, having passed through Old Quay Swing Bridge. Her structural alterations indicate the photo was taken between 1936 and 1953. To the left is the wall adjoining MSC’s lock gate repair shed, and beyond can be seen Old Quay Lock allowing smaller vessels to exit into the River Mersey. In the distance, Britannia Railway Viaduct carrying the LNWR main line from Liverpool to London Euston is shadowed by the lattice structure of Runcorn Widnes Transporter Bridge.
