Barton Swing Aqueduct towpath and horse

Description

Black and white photograph taken by Cyril Arapoff of a horse being led onto the elevated towpath over the Barton Swing Aqueduct on the Bridgewater Canal, so constructed in order to use the full tank width for water. In the background, on the north bank of the Manchester Ship Canal, can be seen the hydraulic pump house and accumulator tower to operate the swing bridge and aqueduct machinery.
