Bridgewater Aqueduct over the Manchester Ship Canal

Description

Black and white photograph taken by Cyril Arapoff showing the Bridgewater Canal Swing Aqueduct at Barton. It replaced James Brindley's Stone Aqueduct over the then River Mersey to enable construction of the Manchester Ship Canal. The aqueduct is seen 'swung off' to permit the passage of craft on the MSC beneath. To the left is part of Manchester Ship Canal's private railway line (the largest in Britain at that time) and beyond, the Norwegian tanker 'Fjordaas' discharges on Barton Oil Berth.
