Boat with box containers on the Barton Swing Aqueduct

Description

Black and white photograph taken by Cyril Arapoff showing an unladen box' boat entering Barton Swing Aqueduct on the Bridgewater Canal from the south side. On the left can be seen the elevated towpath to lead horses across the aqueduct, so constructed in order to use the full tank width for water. Behind the box boat on the north bank of the Manchester Ship Canal can be seen the hydraulic pump house and accumulator tower to operate the swing bridge and aqueduct machinery.
