Negative for this photograph was signed by W. Westoby who was a photographer in Goole from 1881 to 1891. The man between Mr Lawton and Mr Bowman is believed to be Captain Samuel Wright who resigned in 1890 and Mr Bowman took over the role of harbour master. The rest of the men are indeed harbour staff, some of them former ship's captains. The houses are referred to as the Harbour Houses. The harbour is also known as the basin which was for many years the main entrance into Goole docks.
