Legging the boat in underground canal

Description

The boats were drwn along the canal by boys, about 6-10 boats at a time. It is recorded that a boy of 17 has worked a total of 21 boats which represented a load of 147 tons. Extensive working took place over many years in all seam intesected, until finally the canals ceased to be usedf for the transport of coal in 1887. The length of the main canal was about 4 miles, the length of the upper canal was 1 3/4 miles. the total length of the whole canal system was 46 miles which gives some idea of the magnitude of the work undertaken in the most difficult conditions and with primitive tools
