Inclined plane chamber with twin tunnels and 3 men

Description

Showing two tunnels. Theses were added by John Gilbert between 1795-1797. These were made to overcome loading difficulties in loading boats and transporting them to the main canal and known as the inclined plane. The method of working the boats to the lower canal as follows: two locks were constructed at the top of the inclined plane side by side . A loaded boat from the upper level was placed in one lock and immediately over a cradle. The lock gatye connecting the upper level was closed and the water let out by means of a clow, and as the lock emptied the loaded boat settled on the cradle to which it was securely fastened. In the meantime, an empty boat in the main canal was secured to a correspondiong cradle at the bottom of the inclined plain. The weight of the full boat drew the empty boat up the inclined plain on its rollers, into the second lock which was now standing empty. The lock gates were closed and water allowed to run in at the top level until the empty boat floated. This was afterwards taken into the various workings, while at the bottom, the full boat floated off the cradle and proceeded into the main canal.
