Thomas William Avery with daughter Nellie at Apperley Bridge Boatyard

Description

Notes by grandson of Mr Thomas Avery. 'Thomas William Avery on the left with his daughter Nellie(born 1905)on the right. The model barge on the stocks was made by Mr Avery and named Nellie after his daughter. the model was made at the suggestion or instigation of a boat inspector-a man who used to come to the boatyard quite regularly to examine and check barge cabins (living quarters) for fitness for habitation. He could welll be the man on the right of the picture or the one in the middle. My father (Ralph Avery) says that the model was built in exactly the same way that a full size barge was built, ie. keel, frames, separate plankiing etc. and that the fore and aft decks were made so they could be lifted off to reveal the cabins underneath. The real barges had cast iron stoves and this boat inspector apparently obtained two miniature stoves made in brass for the model.. My father says he remembers it being made and remembers his father soaking strips of wood in hot water so that they bent round the bows. He confirms that Canal Carriers[Ltd] who were at Shipley used to take the model round to shows and exhibitions etc. I wonder what became of it? Father seems to associate the name Reynolds with it. Perhaps the owner of Canal Carriers....'
