George Stothert was an ironmonger in Bath in 1815. In 1836 Henry Stothert his son had set up a works in Bristol. By 1844 he was building iron ships and by 1896 his company was building locomotives. The company also made steam pumping engines, including those for the draining of Box Tunnel and in the second half of the 19th century it began making steam powered mobile jib cranes. By 1900 Robert Pitt had joined the company and they concentrated on cranes and handling equipment. The company is now part of the Clarke Chapman Group of Companies.
