System of arrangement

It has not been possible to ascertain the complete original structure of record-keeping from the records held for the Trent and Mersey Canal. This subfonds has been arranged into series by subject, which is how some of the records may have originally been kept. The company's administrative, financial and legal records have been placed first, followed by maps and plans of the canal. These are followed by plans of wharves, basins and company property. These progress through plans of bridges, locks and aqueducts. After this are plans of machinery, plant and installations. Then follow plans showing crossings of canal and company land by pipes, sewers and water mains. At the end of the collection are plans concerning electricity supply. The records within each series have generally been arranged chronologically while keeping records relating to each other together. This means that some records may fall slightly out of the chronological sequence. The series of plans of bridges have been arranged first by bridge number, then by name, then by place and chronologically within this.
